This year's UAE Pioneers Award will celebrate the people working on the front line to protect the country from Covid-19, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid announced on Saturday.
The Vice President and Ruler of Dubai invited Emiratis and residents to nominate anyone who played a role in combating the virus using the hashtag #UAE_Pioneers.
"Brothers and sister, we have instructed that the UAE Pioneers Award this year honour exceptional individuals, institutions and initiatives that contributed to making the UAE a model in dealing with the Covid 19 pandemic," Sheikh Mohammed said on Twitter.
"The nominations should be made using the hashtag #UAE_Pioneers. Everyone will honour each other," he said.
Nominations can also be made on the award's website: uaepioneers.gov.ae.
The UAE Pioneers Award was first launched in 2014 after Sheikh Mohammed led a hashtag campaign on social media prompting UAE residents to support and highlight social work in the country.
On December 1 that year, ahead of the country's 43rd National Day celebrations, Sheikh Mohammed recognised 43 Emiratis with the award.
Last year's award was themed on Tolerance and more than 3,000 people were nominated. The winners were announced by Sheikh Mohammed at the end of the UAE Government Annual Meeting in Abu Dhabi.
The Pioneers Award, regarded as among the Emirates' most distinguished accolades, were presented to people and groups who led the way in highlighting a spirit of tolerance.
Last year's winners included Saji Cheriyan, a Christian from India who built and paid for a Dh1.3 million mosque in Fujairah in 2018. He was joined by the Rev Canon Andrew Thompson, who was also presented with the award.
Other winners of the award included Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth, for her role in showing the world the UAE's model for more tolerant and open societies.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.

Basquiat in Abu Dhabi
One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.
It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.
“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
