As the nation marks the 10th anniversary of Sheikh Zayed’s death on the 19th of Ramadan in the Islamic year 1425, residents recount the ways the Father of the Nation touched their lives.
“Port Zayed was a desert 25 years ago. My uncle used to sell kitchen utensils on the outskirts of Al Mina in a tent. When Sheikh Zayed passed by, he saw the harsh situation of the shopkeepers in the scorching hot sun. His Highness immediately built a shop for my uncle and the other people. My uncle got sick and left for Pakistan. When he came back, the entire area had newly constructed shops. Where do you find such a man in this world?”

“May Allah have mercy on his sou,. I accompanied Sheikh Zayed for 50 years. Every time, his name is mentioned, I feel sorrow. My mother, Osha, used to make coffee for His Highness and she knew exactly the type of coffee he liked: not too dark. He also had a funny side where he would joke and laugh. He had immense love for his land and people. He lived a very simple life and amicably dealt with people from all walks of life. When anyone came to him for money, he would give it with his hand. He also ordered that the Sheikh Zayed Mosque should be open to every religious group without any discrimination. To him, everyone was human.”

He was like a fatherly figure and he considered the citizens as his children.”

“One particular incident sticks in my mind and is perhaps a typical image of the generosity of his spirit and the purity of his heart. In 1969 when Queen Elizabeth II came on a visit to the UAE, Sheikh Zayed accompanied her on a tour of the university recently opened in Al Ain. On that day a young Palestinian refugee recently out from Gaza, penniless and unemployed, was walking around the campus trying to find someone he could ask to be admitted to the university so as to get a degree that could help him later in his life to find a job. When he saw Sheikh Zayed, he tried to approach him. The security guards rushed to stop him but Sheikh Zayed noticed him and asked his guards to bring the boy to him. He heard his request and immediately ordered the university staff to accept this student and to give him a monthly stipend to help him cover his living expenses. The student helped educate his other brothers in Gaza on his stipend, graduated from the University with honours, and immediately found a job in the Abu Dhabi Government where he is still active today. I know of hundreds of stories like this where a simple generous action by Sheikh Zayed meant the physical and moral survival for thousands of families across the globe who could have otherwise languished in poverty and despair.”

Hili 2: Unesco World Heritage site
The site is part of the Hili archaeological park in Al Ain. Excavations there have proved the existence of the earliest known agricultural communities in modern-day UAE. Some date to the Bronze Age but Hili 2 is an Iron Age site. The Iron Age witnessed the development of the falaj, a network of channels that funnelled water from natural springs in the area. Wells allowed settlements to be established, but falaj meant they could grow and thrive. Unesco, the UN's cultural body, awarded Al Ain's sites - including Hili 2 - world heritage status in 2011. Now the most recent dig at the site has revealed even more about the skilled people that lived and worked there.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.

Iran's dirty tricks to dodge sanctions
There’s increased scrutiny on the tricks being used to keep commodities flowing to and from blacklisted countries. Here’s a description of how some work.
1 Going Dark
A common method to transport Iranian oil with stealth is to turn off the Automatic Identification System, an electronic device that pinpoints a ship’s location. Known as going dark, a vessel flicks the switch before berthing and typically reappears days later, masking the location of its load or discharge port.
2. Ship-to-Ship Transfers
A first vessel will take its clandestine cargo away from the country in question before transferring it to a waiting ship, all of this happening out of sight. The vessels will then sail in different directions. For about a third of Iranian exports, more than one tanker typically handles a load before it’s delivered to its final destination, analysts say.
3. Fake Destinations
Signaling the wrong destination to load or unload is another technique. Ships that intend to take cargo from Iran may indicate their loading ports in sanction-free places like Iraq. Ships can keep changing their destinations and end up not berthing at any of them.
4. Rebranded Barrels
Iranian barrels can also be rebranded as oil from a nation free from sanctions such as Iraq. The countries share fields along their border and the crude has similar characteristics. Oil from these deposits can be trucked out to another port and documents forged to hide Iran as the origin.
