Expo 2020 Dubai is to host a virtual space week from Monday.
It is the first in a series of pre-Expo themed weeks that will be held and will feature expert speakers from astronauts and astronomers to other leading figures in the space sector.
The two-day Expo Space Week coincides with World Space Week, which starts on Sunday and ends on October 10.
The Expo School Programme will also participate with ‘The Universe in Motion’ session, among other space-related topics.
Some of the many speakers include Reem Al Hashimy, director-general of Expo 2020 and Minister of State for International Co-operation and president of UAE Space Agency, Sarah Al Amiri.
Speakers from US space agency Nasa are also on the agenda, including Nasa’s chief scientist James Green, planetary scientist Ryan Zeigler and Nasa’s chief historian Brian Odom.
“Space travel and exploration has captured imaginations for generations, and on the back of the exponential rate that technological advancement is progressing, the dream of space tourism is closer to being a reality than ever,” said a statement on the event’s official website.
“During this virtual week, we welcome space industry specialists from around the world as we address the Expo enquiry: how can we safely and productively explore new frontiers?”
“We will hear from astronauts and astronomers, programme leaders and decision makers. We will learn more about the creative ways in which individuals, organisations and nations are showcasing unique contributions to our understanding and exploration of space.”
The event will aim to tap into a growing interest in the space sector across the Emirates.
The UAE has made significant strides in its efforts to cement its status as a major player in the global space race in recent years.
In September of last year, Maj Hazza Al Mansouri became the first Emirati to travel in space during an eight-day journey on board the International Space Station.
In July, the UAE launched the Arab world's first mission to Mars.
The Hope probe has clocked more than 200 million kilometres since it blasted off from Japan’s Tanegashima Island.
The mission aims to study the atmospheric conditions of the Red Planet by capturing data using Hope’s three scientific instruments.
Last month, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, outlined plans for the UAE to send a lunar lander to unexplored regions of the Moon by 2024.

French business
France has organised a delegation of leading businesses to travel to Syria. The group was led by French shipping giant CMA CGM, which struck a 30-year contract in May with the Syrian government to develop and run Latakia port. Also present were water and waste management company Suez, defence multinational Thales, and Ellipse Group, which is currently looking into rehabilitating Syrian hospitals.

Moment of the day When Dilruwan Perera dismissed Yasir Shah to end Pakistan’s limp resistance, the Sri Lankans charged around the field with the fevered delirium of a side not used to winning. Trouble was, they had not. The delivery was deemed a no ball. Sri Lanka had a nervy wait, but it was merely a stay of execution for the beleaguered hosts.
Stat of the day – 5 Pakistan have lost all 10 wickets on the fifth day of a Test five times since the start of 2016. It is an alarming departure for a side who had apparently erased regular collapses from their resume. “The only thing I can say, it’s not a mitigating excuse at all, but that’s a young batting line up, obviously trying to find their way,” said Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach.
The verdict Test matches in the UAE are known for speeding up on the last two days, but this was extreme. The first two innings of this Test took 11 sessions to complete. The remaining two were done in less than four. The nature of Pakistan’s capitulation at the end showed just how difficult the transition is going to be in the post Misbah-ul-Haq era.

What is an FTO Designation?
FTO designations impose immigration restrictions on members of the organisation simply by virtue of their membership and triggers a criminal prohibition on knowingly providing material support or resources to the designated organisation as well as asset freezes.
It is a crime for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to or receive military-type training from or on behalf of a designated FTO.
Representatives and members of a designated FTO, if they are aliens, are inadmissible to and, in certain circumstances removable from, the United States.
Except as authorised by the Secretary of the Treasury, any US financial institution that becomes aware that it has possession of or control over funds in which an FTO or its agent has an interest must retain possession of or control over the funds and report the funds to the Treasury Department.
