Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah introduced new rules to stem the spread of Covid-19.
The measures include capping mall capacity at 60 per cent, limiting public transport capacity to 50 per cent and cutting capacity at cinemas, entertainment events and venues to 50 per cent.
In a wider UAE effort to tackle rising case numbers, other emirates introduced similar rules.
The UAE announced 3,539 new cases of infection on Wednesday. Infections have increased since January, but this has coincided with a major UAE-wide vaccination programme.
Other rules introduced by Ras Al Khaimah are:
Fitness centres and gyms limited to 50 per cent capacity
Capacity at pools and private beaches at hotels cut to 50 per cent
Public beaches and parks set at 70 per cent of capacity
The number of people allowed at family and social gatherings such as weddings is capped at 10, while funerals are allowed to have 20
- All members of the public must maintain a physical distance of two metres
- Restaurants and cafes are required to maintain a 2m distance between tables, where no more than four people are allowed to sit together, unless they belong to the same family
Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah called on everyone to follow the rules.
The UAE has embarked on one of the fastest vaccination programmes in the world. More than four million doses have been administered so far, with officials hoping to reach 50 per cent of the population by the end of March.
As well as the Sinopharm vaccine, production of which is due to start in the country this year, Dubai also approved widespread use of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca drugs.

Under ‘snapback’, measures imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council in six resolutions would be restored, including:
- An arms embargo
- A ban on uranium enrichment and reprocessing

What is Financial Fair Play?
Introduced in 2011 by Uefa, European football’s governing body, it demands that clubs live within their means. Chiefly, spend within their income and not make substantial losses.
What the rules dictate?
The second phase of its implementation limits losses to €30 million (Dh136m) over three seasons. Extra expenditure is permitted for investment in sustainable areas (youth academies, stadium development, etc). Money provided by owners is not viewed as income. Revenue from “related parties” to those owners is assessed by Uefa's “financial control body” to be sure it is a fair value, or in line with market prices.
What are the penalties?
There are a number of punishments, including fines, a loss of prize money or having to reduce squad size for European competition – as happened to PSG in 2014. There is even the threat of a competition ban, which could in theory lead to PSG’s suspension from the Uefa Champions League.

What is graphene?
Graphene is extracted from graphite and is made up of pure carbon.
It is 200 times more resistant than steel and five times lighter than aluminum.
It conducts electricity better than any other material at room temperature.
It is thought that graphene could boost the useful life of batteries by 10 per cent.
Graphene can also detect cancer cells in the early stages of the disease.
The material was first discovered when Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were 'playing' with graphite at the University of Manchester in 2004.

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].

Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
