ABU DHABI // Officials have safely recovered an industrial device containing radioactive material that went missing in Musaffah last month, according to WAM, the state news agency.
A passerby found the camera-like tool on Sunday night in Al Rahba, 30km northeast of Abu Dhabi, and notified police. Police notified the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, and officials from the authority retrieved the device. It had not been damaged, they said.
The device, which contains the radioisotope iridium 192, was reported missing from Musaffah in October. Comparable to a small X-ray machine, it is commonly used in the welding industry, to check the density of metal.
Officials had warned that if anyone tampered with the device's yellow casing, they would be exposed to radiation, risking sickness or injury. They said last night that there were no traces of radioactive contamination when they recovered the device.
"This case thankfully had a happy end, without anyone being hurt," Dr John Loy, Director of the FANR Radiation Safety Department, told WAM.
"But it showed vulnerabilities on the part of our licensees in securing radioactive sources, and we will look into that. It also showed how closely local and federal authorities must work together."

Changing visa rules
For decades the UAE has granted two and three year visas to foreign workers, tied to their current employer. Now that's changing.
Last year, the UAE cabinet also approved providing 10-year visas to foreigners with investments in the UAE of at least Dh10 million, if non-real estate assets account for at least 60 per cent of the total. Investors can bring their spouses and children into the country.
It also approved five-year residency to owners of UAE real estate worth at least 5 million dirhams.
The government also said that leading academics, medical doctors, scientists, engineers and star students would be eligible for similar long-term visas, without the need for financial investments in the country.
The first batch - 20 finalists for the Mohammed bin Rashid Medal for Scientific Distinction.- were awarded in January and more are expected to follow.
