DUBAI // Ramadan and the summer heat will mean subdued independence celebrations today for expatriate Pakistanis.
Pakistan is celebrating its 66th anniversary but most expatriates will mark the day quietly with family and friends.
The country's embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate in Dubai will hold flag-raising ceremonies this morning, while the Pakistan Business Council in the capital has arranged a celebratory iftar.
Tonight the country's former president Pervez Musharraf will also host an iftar at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Dubai, where he will address members of his All Pakistan Muslim League political party.
For Homa Qamar, a Pakistani fashion designer in Sharjah, Independence Day is traditionally one of the biggest celebrations in the community.
"I will be having an iftar with a couple of my girlfriends and we will be dressed in green for the occasion," Ms Qamar said. "We will also be putting the flags on our cars and visiting our friends."
In Dubai, celebrations took place early, with the Pakistan Association Dubai organising an evening of activities last night.
"We started off with a pre-iftar medical check for labourers and had a Quran recital and speeches from various members of the association," said Rizwan Fancy, the group's community welfare officer.
"With it still being Ramadan and so hot outside it hasn't been possible to organise anything during the day, so we felt this was the best way to do it. I think most people are preferring to have a low-key independence day this time around."
Jamil Ahmed Khan, the Pakistani ambassador to the UAE, said August 14 "marks the realisation of that emancipatory dream of the poet philosopher of the East, Allama Iqbal.
"Lighting up the flare for freedom in the hearts and minds of the south Asian Muslims ultimately set the tone for the struggle by the founder of the nation, Qaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah, thus culminating in the creation of Pakistan."
Mr Khan praised the close ties between the UAE and Pakistan
"Around 1.2 million vibrant Pakistani expatriates are settled in the UAE and playing their role in the phenomenal success story of the United Arab Emirates," he said.
More than 5,000 Pakistani companies are registered in the Emirates and trade between the two stands at US$8 billion (Dh29.38bn).

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially
Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
