ABU DHABI // Defence counsel for a man accused of murdering an Egyptian has asked that the Criminal Court allow him to undergo a full psychiatric examination before deciding his fate.
A B, from Tunis, is accused along with his girlfriend R Q, from Canada, of murdering her former boyfriend, A S.
A committee assigned by public prosecution conducted a “visual examination” on A B, without any clinical testing, said his defence lawyer, Dr Mohammed Al Khazraji.
The committee decided that he was fully aware of his actions, despite reports from health facilities in the capital showing that he was suffering from psychiatric problems, he added.
This was not good enough, the defence argued.
The lawyer representing the victim’s family objected, insisting that the defendant was fully aware of his actions and presented a memo requesting the maximum possible punishment for the two defendants.
According to police investigators, R Q aborted A S’s baby before he left her for a Moroccan woman.
She then convinced A B to avenge her and kill him.
A B denied ever knowing, seeing or hearing of A S’s name, while R Q said they were in a relationship for eight years.
The case was adjourned.
