A Dubai prison worker served up extra meals for inmates after accepting mobile phone recharge card bribes, a court heard.
The member of staff was caught out after a sting operation was set up to catch him striking the dining deal with a prisoner, prosecutors said.
The Indian man, 23, denied accepting the bribes at Dubai Criminal Court.
The defendant is said to have provided an additional meal in exchange for the recharge card on May 15.
“One of the inmates gave me the card but I did not know why,” he said to judges.
After staff were informed about the plot, police arranged for a prisoner to ask for an extra meal in exchange for a Dh100 mobile recharge card.
"The same inmate was tasked to ask for an extra meal in return for a Dh100 mobile recharge card, and when he did, the accused agreed to that," said an Emirati police officer.
He said that officers watched as the accused made the meal deal with the inmate. He was found in possession of the card after being subjected to a search.
A verdict is expected on October 16.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
