DUBAI // A policeman who took a Dh2,000 bribe to help a prisoner escape from custody has been jailed for three years and fired from his job.
Dubai Criminal Court convicted the 31-year-old Yemeni of asking for and accepting bribes between August and October last year, which he denied in court in December.
A 29-year-old cook said he met the officer in a cafeteria and exchanged phone numbers. A month later, his friend was arrested and taken to Al Rafaa police station.
“I called him to help release my friend but he asked for money to do so,” said the Bangladeshi, who called police.
The officer was paid Dh900 upfront, with the rest to be paid when the prisoner was released.
He was arrested as he took money from the cook on October 3 last year.
The court fined him Dh2,000 and ordered his deportation after completing his prison sentence.
