A public park with 2,000 local trees, sports facilities and playgrounds opened on Reem Island in Abu Dhabi.

The 27,500-square-metre Al Fay Park was opened by Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, on Wednesday.

Abu Dhabi Media Office said it aimed to create a "forest like" environment that used 40 per cent less water than traditional parks.

The park is beside Gate Towers on the island.

Authorities in Abu Dhabi, meanwhile, over the past few years upgraded parks, established new ones and created a better urban experience for residents.

Al Hudayriat Island, for example, is now home to camping spots, jogging and cycling routes and restaurants.

New cycle lanes and small urban parks also opened across the city in recent months.

The capital last year opened Jubail Mangrove Park featuring a two-kilometre boardwalk to attract nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts.
