New Dh3,000 emergency service fine to come into force on Monday

A Dh3,000 fine for failing to give way to emergency services is to come into force on July 1, Abu Dhabi police said on Sunday.

The new penalty, announced earlier this month, aims to improve road and traffic safety.

Motorists found to have impeded ambulances, police or firefighters will also have their cars impounded for a month and receive six points on their licence. The new fine triples the existing penalty of Dh1,000.

Abu Dhabi Police stressed that giving way to emergency vehicles was critical to improving response times to accidents.

In Dubai, about 120 drivers are fined each year for failing to get out of the way quickly enough, according to official figures.

“Impeding the movement of emergency vehicles can prevent or delay ambulances getting to the injured in good time,” Abu Dhabi Police said in a statement.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
  • Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
  • Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
  • Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
  • Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
  • Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
