DUBAI // More than 680 complaints were made against Dubai Police’s officers or services in the first nine months of the year.
Of the 687 total, the unit responsible for logging them found 98 to be valid.
The Rights and Freedoms Protection unit at the police Department of Human Rights investigates the complaints, which are registered either through the 901 police hotline or website.
Lt Col Ahmad Al Mansouri, the unit’s director, said that last year Dubai Police recorded 713 cases, of which 130 were deemed valid.
“The majority of the valid complaints are pertaining to traffic,” he said. “For example, a case in which the incorrect entry of a licence plate had resulted in the issuance of a ticket to the wrong person.”
The director said the public should not be afraid to register a complaint with the police if they feel they have been mistreated.
“If a police officer is found to have committed a crime, his case will be transferred to public prosecution,” he said. “Even if he abuses his jurisdiction as a police officer, he will face a disciplinary board that will punish him for his actions. An officer can even get fired.”
