DUBAI // Counterfeit car parts valued at more than Dh30 million were seized last year during raids in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.
The 26 raids, organised by the Department of Economic Development and law firms in partnership with Al Futtaim Motors, resulted in Dh750,000 of fines being issued.
More than 220,000 products valued at Dh31.3m were confiscated, including motor oil and lubricants, air and fuel filters, brake pads and discs.
“Al Futtaim Motors has come a long way in the battle against counterfeit products, having conducted hundreds of raids over the past few years and seizing hundreds of millions worth of confiscated products,” said Ralf Zimmermann, the company’s general manager for after-sales.
“We have always highlighted the importance of installing only genuine and manufacturer-approved parts on vehicles, and we continue to invest in educating the public against buying counterfeit products.
“In the long run, the cost savings from counterfeit products is diminished by highly degraded quality that requires more frequent replacing, aside from being unsafe and potentially endangering the lives of drivers and passengers.”
Al Futtaim also organised 10 sessions attended by more than 300 government officials in six emirates who have been trained to spot fake products.
The company has also taken part in 13 exhibitions to educate the public about the dangers of counterfeit parts.
Al Futtaim Motors, distributor for Toyota in the UAE, sells genuine spare parts for Toyota, Lexus and Hino.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Countdown to Zero exhibition will show how disease can be beaten
Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease, an international multimedia exhibition created by the American Museum of National History in collaboration with The Carter Center, will open in Abu Dhabi a month before Reaching the Last Mile.
Opening on October 15 and running until November 15, the free exhibition opens at The Galleria mall on Al Maryah Island, and has already been seen at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
