SHARJAH // Eight warehouses belonging to a petrochemical firm have been destroyed by fire. Officials from Technocam said the loss of stock housed in its warehouses in Sharjah industrial area No 11 could amount to millions of dirhams. Fire broke out at 3.30pm today and took firefighters from Sharjah, Ajman and Dubai four hours to put out. Col Wahid al Serkal, director general of Sharjah Civil Defence Department, said there were no casualties. Col al Serkal said the fire spread because of petroleum and chemicals that were stored in barrels in the warehouses. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze. Col al Serkal said there have now been four major fires this year in Sharjah but the number of incidents is down on 2008, which saw 40 such blazes around the emirate. *The National
