DUBAI // A Saudi Arabian man crashed a car with more than 60kg of amphetamine tablets in it as he tried to escape police, Dubai Criminal Court was told.
A police major said the Saudi, 29, was a member of a drug gang and when he saw police closing in on him at a Yemeni restaurant in Al Qusais, he got into his car and crashed it into another as he tried to flee. He then took off on foot.
“We gave chase and arrested him a few blocks away,” the major told the judge. “I took him back to his car and had it searched in front of him. We found three large bags, which he claimed contained mobile devices, but when we opened them they all contained drugs.”
The defendant told police he was given the bags by a man in Al Aweer and he did not know they contained drugs.
“He was tested for using drugs but his results came negative,” said the policeman.
The Saudi was fined Dh20,000 and will serve a year in prison before being deported for possessing drugs to sell.
