DUBAI // A woman ran out of her room naked to escape from a man who broke into her apartment to rob her and then forced her to strip naked, Dubai Criminal Court has been told.
P J, 28, from Sierra Leone, denied charges of armed robbery, sexual assault and trespassing when he appeared in court on Sunday morning.
“These allegations are false, I don’t know about any of these accusations and, no sir, I did not do them,” said the defendant to the presiding judge.
Prosecutors allege that on December 18 two years ago, the accused forced open the woman’s bedroom balcony door at about 2am.
“I woke up to some noise and found him standing right in front of me - I was terrified and started screaming,” said 25-year-old Filipino D L P.
The defendant allegedly gagged her then threatened to kill her with a knife he had. D L P said the man told her he would kill her if she was not quiet, after which he demanded that she hand over all her money.
“I gave him my purse, which had Dh400 in it, and a necklace I was wearing at the time. After that he told me he would kill me if I did not take off my clothes,” said the service agent.
She added that P J looked at her naked body for quite some time then told her to turn and face the wall. He then proceeded to search her apartment for valuables.
“At which point I ran out naked and took shelter in another bedroom where my flat-mates were sleeping and locked the door,” said D L P, who then called police.
The incident happened in Al Baraha, an area which the woman has since moved out of, the court heard.
The defendant was not arrested at the time but a few months later, D L P received a call from police to identify him, which she did. He was then referred to prosecutors, who said P J confessed to all charges during interrogations, though he now denies them in court.
The next hearing will be on February 23.

Gough-Walters was born in Al Wasl Hospital in Dubai, raised in Sharjah, did not take up rugby seriously till she was 15, has a master’s in global governance and ethics, and once worked as an immigration officer at the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi. In the summer of 2021 she played for Wales against England in rugby league, in a match that was broadcast live on TV.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
