DUBAI // A man was killed by a piece of metal that struck him in the head after the tyre he was inflating blew up, the Court of Misdemeanours heard.
Mohammed Jamal, 37, a Bangladeshi who worked at a sewage service company in Dubai Industrial City, died on August 10 last year due to a skull fracture and brain trauma.
Mr Jamal’s colleague, M M, 32, also from Bangladesh, told police officers they had both been told to replace a lorry’s tyres.
“We arrived at nearly 11am and Mohammed started fixing the tyre. He finished and then started refilling the tyre with air when it suddenly exploded and its rim struck Mohammed in the front side of his head and chest, killing him on the spot,” he said.
Prosecutors later charged company manager W W, 47, and safety supervisor A S, 35, both from Pakistan, with accidentally causing the death of Mr Jamal. Both men denied the charges.
W W was acquitted, while A S was given a one-month suspended sentence. He was also fined Dh2,000 and ordered to pay blood money to the Mr Jamal’s family. A S appealed and a hearing was set for August 7.
