Man and pregnant woman die in Dubai tour bus crash

Two people have died and several others were injured after a mini-bus carrying tourists crashed into a parked truck in Dubai.
Among those who died was a pregnant Moroccan woman, whose Italian husband sustained injuries, and an Indian man, whose wife is in critical condition in hospital.
A Dubai Traffic Police source said three others were severely injured and two sustained minor injuries in an accident on Emirates Road at 5pm on Monday.
The accident involved a mini-bus carrying tourists and a truck that was parked on the side of the road due to congestion.
The source said the case is now being handled by Al Rashidiya police station.
Consulates in Dubai are in the process of repatriating the bodies of those who died. "The certificates had to be issued yesterday by the local authorities and we've cancelled the passport already," said Sumathi Vasudev, consul of community affairs at the Indian Consulate in Dubai. "Local authorities only allow representatives from the family to collect the documents so it's with them now and we'll assist them in whatever they require."
She said the body would most probably be repatriated on Wednesday.
A representative from the Italian Consulate in Dubai was in hospital at the side of the Italian man who lost his wife.
The Moroccan Consulate said it would need to check with the husband whether he wished to send his wife's body back to Morocco or not.

“We usually have someone who comes to the consulate to bring certificates from the hospital, police and all authorities before checking with the authorities in Morocco to send the body back,” said a representative from the Consulate. “It can take up to 24 hours but it depends case by case. We just have to check with her husband if that’s what he wants for now.”

Anxiety and work stress major factors

Anxiety, work stress and social isolation are all factors in the recogised rise in mental health problems.

A study UAE Ministry of Health researchers published in the summer also cited struggles with weight and illnesses as major contributors.

Its authors analysed a dozen separate UAE studies between 2007 and 2017. Prevalence was often higher in university students, women and in people on low incomes.

One showed 28 per cent of female students at a Dubai university reported symptoms linked to depression. Another in Al Ain found 22.2 per cent of students had depressive symptoms - five times the global average.

It said the country has made strides to address mental health problems but said: “Our review highlights the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms and depression, which may long have been overlooked."

Prof Samir Al Adawi, of the department of behavioural medicine at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, who was not involved in the study but is a recognised expert in the Gulf, said how mental health is discussed varies significantly between cultures and nationalities.

“The problem we have in the Gulf is the cross-cultural differences and how people articulate emotional distress," said Prof Al Adawi.

“Someone will say that I have physical complaints rather than emotional complaints. This is the major problem with any discussion around depression."
