Man accused of using toy gun and death threats to scare speeding bus drivers

A man has been accused of using a toy gun to scare bus drivers, threatening to kill them if he ever saw them speeding again, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Court records stated that on March 2 this year, the Indian defendant, 35, was apprehended at the Global Village car park in Dubai after three drivers reported him to a police officer for carrying a gun.
"The men were terrified and they said someone threatened them with a gun. I called the operations room at once, then asked the men to direct me to his location," said a police officer, 51.
When the men pointed out the accused, the police officer said he followed him slowly to his car before initiating a conversation with him. "I asked him for his license and registration, then asked if he had threatened any one with a gun."
In court records, the accused said he did approach three drivers carrying a gun, but it was plastic and not real.
"[The men] drive public transport buses and I saw them speeding, which poses a danger to many lives. So when I used my little daughter's toy gun to scare them against speeding," he said.
One of the victims told prosecutors that he was waiting for passengers when the accused knocked on the bus's window. "He knocked and when I looked at him, he asked me where I worked and I answered. Then suddenly, he lifted up his jacket and showed me a gun saying that he would kill me if he ever saw me speeding again," said the Bangladeshi bus driver, 33.
An Indian bus driver said the accused stood in front of his bus, forcing him to stop, before walking towards the window.
"He accused me of trying to run him over and said he would kill me if he saw me driving over the speed limit," said the 43-year-old driver.
The accused denied three counts of issuing threats.
"Its a toy gun, your honour. I meant no harm," said the defendant in court.
The next hearing will be on May 20.

Conflict, drought, famine

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.

The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
