Major upgrades approved for Dubai’s Airport Road

A Dh404 million upgrade to Dubai’s Airport Road has been approved by the emirate’s Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid.

Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the Roads and Transport Authority, said: “The upgrading of the Airport Road is part of a plan developed by the RTA to cater to the projected growth in the number of travellers to the Dubai International Airport, which is expected to serve about 92 million travellers by 2020.

“The traffic study [we commissioned] emphasised the importance of accomplishing the airport upgrading project by 2017.”

The project will see several major intersections receive upgrades, as well as the construction of bridges and tunnels.

With the upgrades, the RTA aims to increase the capacity of Airport Road by an extra 5,000 vehicles per hour.
