Low-cloud warning after heavy fog

DUBAI // Drivers are being warned of the threat of low clouds today and tomorrow after dense fog forced motorists off the road yesterday.

Several drivers were seen stopping on the hard shoulder as late as 9am while many continued to drive with their hazard lights on, despite repeated police warnings.

Dubai Police urged motorists to use fog lights instead of hazards.

"It can result in mistakes and can cause accidents," a police official said. "Hazard lights are only for emergencies. The cars behind will not know when the driver wants to turn left or right.

"It is also not advisable to use high beam in foggy conditions."

He urged people to wait until the fog cleared if they were afraid of driving. "If the motorist cannot drive it is better to stop and wait for a while," the official said, adding there were some minor accidents in the emirate but nothing serious.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology said it had issued warnings on Twitter of foggy conditions.

"The visibility was less than 100 metres all over the country and all the main highways," said a duty forecaster. He said visibility at 8am was less than 50 metres in Al Dhafra, 100 metres in Al Ain and 200 metres in Abu Dhabi.

The forecaster said the chance of fog was much lower today but it could rain slightly in the northern region. "The sea will be rough in the evening and night," he added.

In an update late this morning, the NCMS said visibility on roads in Ras Al Khaimah was now at 600 metres, and had reached 2,000 metres in Sharjah.

Tips for entertaining with ease

·         Set the table the night before. It’s a small job but it will make you feel more organised once done.

·         As the host, your mood sets the tone. If people arrive to find you red-faced and harried, they’re not going to relax until you do. Take a deep breath and try to exude calm energy.

·         Guests tend to turn up thirsty. Fill a big jug with iced water and lemon or lime slices and encourage people to help themselves.

·         Have some background music on to help create a bit of ambience and fill any initial lulls in conversations.

·         The meal certainly doesn’t need to be ready the moment your guests step through the door, but if there’s a nibble or two that can be passed around it will ward off hunger pangs and buy you a bit more time in the kitchen.

·         You absolutely don’t have to make every element of the brunch from scratch. Take inspiration from our ideas for ready-made extras and by all means pick up a store-bought dessert.
