Labourer jailed for knife attack in Dubai labour camp

DUBAI // A labourer who attacked his colleague with a kitchen knife over a dispute about cooking equipment was jailed for two years on Sunday.

The Dubai Criminal Court heard that Bangladeshi A A, 30, caused permanent injury to his compatriot J A, 30, in the attack at a labour camp in Al Quoz.

On July 14 last year, the defendant lost his temper with J A after finding him using the oven, which he claimed belonged to him.

“I told him it was the company’s stove not his, so he got furious,” said J A. “Then his friend, who is a fellow worker, took him back to his room to calm him down and asked me to lock my door.”

Five minutes later, J A said that the defendant barged his door open and stabbed at his head with the knife.

“I raised my left arm to protect my head, so I was badly injured,” said J A, adding that as he started screaming loudly, A A ran out of the room.

A fellow worker heard the commotion and rushed to J A’s room to find him covered in blood. He called police and ambulance. Police found A A in his room with the kitchen knife on his table.

A forensic report confirmed J A had lost the mobility in his left hand and fingers, as well as partial use of hand muscles, which the court considered a permanent disability of 35 per cent. A A will be deported after completing his jail term.
