ABU DHABI // A man sentenced to Dh22,000 for drink driving said he appealed his sentence to apologise to the court for his actions.
JJ, from Ireland, was convicted of drinking alcohol without a liquor license, possessing alcohol for consumption, recklessly driving under the influence of alcohol and destroying public property.
He was sentenced to fines of Dh2,000 and Dh20,000 by the First Instance Court.
He plead guilty at the Appeals Court on Sunday.
“So what are your requests, why did you appeal your verdict,” asked chief justice Dr Khairi Al Kabbash.
“Because I would like to apologise to the court for what I did and to ask for a lighter sentence,” replied JJ.
“You know that alcohol absents the mind and it is not allowed to driver under its influence?”
JJ said he understood his mistake and said he would never do it again.
A verdict will be announced on October 20.
