Hundreds of motorists fined for driving 'noisy' cars in Abu Dhabi

More than 600 drivers have been fined for driving noisy cars in the capital.
On its Twitter account, Abu Dhabi Police said it had issued Dh2,000 fines to 626 drivers and added 12 black points to their licences. The violations were committed in the first three months of this year, the tweet said. Some motorists modify their cars to amplify the sound of their car's exhaust note, despite strict rules being in place over noise and emission limits.
Abu Dhabi Police has been using its social media platforms to remind the general public about the traffic law, which was amended last July. The changes to the law were made as the authorities seek to reduce the number of accidents on the road and curb antisocial behaviour.

Jihad Huzayen, 40, an Abu Dhabi resident said that she hears cars gunning their engines outside her home almost every evening.
"Just as I put my children to sleep around 8pm, my husband and I hear the tyres of cars screeching and the engines running loudly outside. We tried to make a recording one time because the noise was just unbearable. My husband went outside to take a video of the car, but the driver drove off," she said.
The penalty for this type of behaviour is severe, she said, but it doesn't seem to stop some motorists from breaking the law.

Basquiat in Abu Dhabi

One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.

It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.

“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
