HSBC UAE customers have been struck by excess charges on their Visa cards last week following a computer system issue.
Some customers have been charged three to four times the amount due to the bank.
The bank said a technical issue resulted in the overcharging on a number of transactions that happened on December 2.
It has assured customers that they will be protected against any potential losses from these transactions.
Angry customers took to the social media to express their concern over the issue.
A Facebook user called Pretzel Villajuan wrote (sic): "Oh.. i thought i am the only one whos having problem with dec 2 transactions.. can't sleep last night thinking about it. I bought a snack at DQ for 24 aed but they charged me 90.. from another store i purchased 130 aed and its coming 490.94 on my online banking.. "
Others posted to share their anger.
HSBC UAE issued a statement on their Facebook page.
“We have identified an issue related to some transactions made on the 2nd of Dec on HSBC Visa cards. We are in the process of rectifying the issue and we want to assure our affected customers that we will reverse any incorrect amounts, fees and charges that resulted from this issue. We regret any inconvenience caused,” the bank said in a statement.

The flights
Etihad and Emirates fly direct to Kolkata from Dh1,504 and Dh1,450 return including taxes, respectively. The flight takes four hours 30 minutes outbound and 5 hours 30 minute returning.
The trains
Numerous trains link Kolkata and Murshidabad but the daily early morning Hazarduari Express (3’ 52”) is the fastest and most convenient; this service also stops in Plassey. The return train departs Murshidabad late afternoon. Though just about feasible as a day trip, staying overnight is recommended.
The hotels
Mursidabad’s hotels are less than modest but Berhampore, 11km south, offers more accommodation and facilities (and the Hazarduari Express also pauses here). Try Hotel The Fame, with an array of rooms from doubles at Rs1,596/Dh90 to a ‘grand presidential suite’ at Rs7,854/Dh443.
