ABU DHABI // The quality of training offered by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development has won international recognition.
The minister, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, accepted ISO certification on the ministry's behalf yesterday during a ceremony attended by ministry undersecretaries and the British ambassador.
The International Organisation for Standardisation, founded in 1947, develops voluntary standards for "products, services and good practice".
Its ISO standards are designed to produce maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
The ministry's certification relates to how an organisation analyses, plans, implements and evaluates training procedures. It takes about two years for an organisation to meet ISO standards.
"Some organisations give training but they never measure how good it is and how well it actually stays," said Theuns Kotze, ISO's regional head. "You have to ensure that the knowledge level actually increases.
"There must be a transfer of knowledge, skill and competency.
"I can test if you understand what I'm saying - and you can tell me what I just told you.
"But you have to learn the skills and get competent in them."
The ministry already holds international certifications for quality management, environmental management and health and safety management.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.

Volunteers offer workers a lifeline
Community volunteers have swung into action delivering food packages and toiletries to the men.
When provisions are distributed, the men line up in long queues for packets of rice, flour, sugar, salt, pulses, milk, biscuits, shaving kits, soap and telecom cards.
Volunteers from St Mary’s Catholic Church said some workers came to the church to pray for their families and ask for assistance.
Boxes packed with essential food items were distributed to workers in the Dubai Investments Park and Ras Al Khaimah camps last week. Workers at the Sonapur camp asked for Dh1,600 towards their gas bill.
“Especially in this year of tolerance we consider ourselves privileged to be able to lend a helping hand to our needy brothers in the Actco camp," Father Lennie Connully, parish priest of St Mary’s.
Workers spoke of their helplessness, seeing children’s marriages cancelled because of lack of money going home. Others told of their misery of being unable to return home when a parent died.
“More than daily food, they are worried about not sending money home for their family,” said Kusum Dutta, a volunteer who works with the Indian consulate.
