The UAE reported 1,491 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday.

There were 1,826 new recoveries in the past 24 hours and 124,404 tests during the same period.

No new Covid-19-related deaths were reported.

Since the start of the outbreak, 123,764 cases have been recorded. Of these, 116,894 have recovered.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health and Prevention encouraged people to apply for vacancies for nurses and nursing assistants, who are on the front lines of the fight against the pandemic.

“Fighting the epidemic is still ongoing and the contribution of the nursing staff will help to succeed in this mission,” the ministry said in a video posted on Saturday.

“The opportunity is open for those wishing to join the work within the nursing teams.”

The coronavirus cases globally crossed 42.4 million, with several countries recording a major surge in numbers over the past weeks due to people gathering indoors as temperatures drop.

The world death toll has passed 1.14 million and more than 31.4 people have recovered.

A new report has said the world's tourism industry was unlikely to see the same level of spending that was achieved last year until 2024.

Global consultancy McKinsey said the tourism industry may face a drop of  $8.1 trillion in spending as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The virus has thrown the travel and tourism industry across the world out of gear due to stay home measures and travel restrictions that have shut down cities and impacted businesses.

Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company

The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.

He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.

“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.

“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.

HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.

With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.
