A private hospital in Sharjah vaccinated more than 1,900 people after it joined the government’s Covid-19 inoculation drive.
Zulekha Hospital Sharjah's initiative began on January 3. Three hundred people received injections in the first three days. So far, 1,925 people have been vaccinated there.The hospital is offering the Sinopharm vaccine to residents with a valid Emirates ID. The inoculation is free.
“Covid-19 vaccination is the best and most successful medical intervention,” said Dr Pramod Chhabrani, the hospital’s specialist medical microbiology and infection control doctor.
“It can help to protect you by creating an antibody response in your body without getting you sick with the virus.
"It also might help to protect people around you from Covid-19 infection by providing herd immunity.”
Developed by scientists at China’s state-owned pharmaceutical enterprise, the Sinopharm vaccine follows the tried-and-tested route of training the body’s immune system to detect and destroy viruses using injections of deactivated virus.
It is available across the country without charge at dozens of hospitals, vaccination centres, majlis and clinics.
Some clinics said they had waiting lists of weeks before new appointments could be made.
Philip Jacob, 49, a worker in the pharmaceutical industry, was one of the first to receive the vaccine at Zulekha Hospital. He encouraged others to get vaccinated.
“I will definitely inform my family members and friends to go for vaccination at the earliest,” he said.
Dinah Argonza, 39, from the Philippines also received the shot.
“This pandemic has brought fear in each of us ... now the vaccine has come and it has lifted that anxiety,” she said.

The Covid-19 vaccination drive is the country's largest to date. The health authorities aim to inoculate half the population by the end of the first quarter.
More than a million doses have been administered since the national campaign began on December 13, four days after the UAE officially registered the Sinopharm vaccine for nationwide use. Phase 3 clinical trials had already been carried out and established 86 per cent efficacy against the coronavirus.
Two weeks later, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved for use in Dubai.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires two doses to be taken 21 days apart. The Sinopharm vaccine is administered 28 days apart.

Explainer: Tanween Design Programme
Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.
The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.
It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.
The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”

Iraq negotiating over Iran sanctions impact
- US sanctions on Iran’s energy industry and exports took effect on Monday, November 5.
- Washington issued formal waivers to eight buyers of Iranian oil, allowing them to continue limited imports. Iraq did not receive a waiver.
- Iraq’s government is cooperating with the US to contain Iranian influence in the country, and increased Iraqi oil production is helping to make up for Iranian crude that sanctions are blocking from markets, US officials say.
- Iraq, the second-biggest producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, pumped last month at a record 4.78 million barrels a day, former Oil Minister Jabbar Al-Luaibi said on Oct. 20. Iraq exported 3.83 million barrels a day last month, according to tanker tracking and data from port agents.
- Iraq has been working to restore production at its northern Kirkuk oil field. Kirkuk could add 200,000 barrels a day of oil to Iraq’s total output, Hook said.
- The country stopped trucking Kirkuk oil to Iran about three weeks ago, in line with U.S. sanctions, according to four people with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified because they aren’t allowed to speak to media.
- Oil exports from Iran, OPEC’s third-largest supplier, have slumped since President Donald Trump announced in May that he’d reimpose sanctions. Iran shipped about 1.76 million barrels a day in October out of 3.42 million in total production, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
- Benchmark Brent crude fell 47 cents to $72.70 a barrel in London trading at 7:26 a.m. local time. U.S. West Texas Intermediate was 25 cents lower at $62.85 a barrel in New York. WTI held near the lowest level in seven months as concerns of a tightening market eased after the U.S. granted its waivers to buyers of Iranian crude.
