A mask that only covers the nose could provide some protection against Covid-19 for people as they eat or drink, some researchers in Mexico have claimed.
The mask is designed to cover the nose but leave the mouth exposed while people have their meals in public places. It should be worn beneath a full mask and only be unveiled during a meal, according to a demonstration video that has been widely circulated online.
Its wearer would have to breathe through their nose while eating to prevent from inhaling or exhaling respiratory droplets carrying Covid-19 through the mouth.
The nasal mask was designed by Mexican scientist, Gustavo Acosta Altamirano, at the National Polytechnic Institute, in Mexico City.
It has drawn international attention with doctors worldwide doubting its efficacy, saying the coronavirus can still be transmitted through the mouth and eyes. Some said the mask could potentially reduce transmission but may also offer a false sense of security for its wearer.
Wearing a partial mask is in direct contradiction to the advice given by health experts around the world, including the World Health Organisation.
WHO recommends people wear full face masks that tightly cover their nose, mouth and chin to best protect from the virus. Last month, a study by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in the US showed that double-masking can significantly reduce transmission of Covid-19.
It is yet unclear which company manufactures the mask or if they are available to the public.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
