SHARJAH // An auction of seven pure-bred Arabian horses last night raised Dh1.5 million for the Friends of Cancer Patients' Pink Caravan Campaign and marked the launch of three months of fund-raising activities.
The event at the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club was attended by Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed, Ruler of Sharjah, and his wife, Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed, who is chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and honorary president of the Friends organisation.
The organisation was established in 1999 to provide moral, financial, emotional and medical support for cancer patients and boost awareness about early detection and prevention within the UAE community.
Sheikha Jawaher last night thanked those who stood by her for 10 years as she worked to support cancer patients.
The campaign also involves a horseback ride from April 2-12, which will start in Sharjah and will move through all the emirates, finishing in Abu Dhabi.
"My dream is to ride across the UAE, which was inspired by a very brave friends," said Cecile Guillemot, one of the organisers.
"This journey is testament to many individuals working towards one direction."

The currency conundrum
Russ Mould, investment director at online trading platform AJ Bell, says almost every major currency has challenges right now. “The US has a huge budget deficit, the euro faces political friction and poor growth, sterling is bogged down by Brexit, China’s renminbi is hit by debt fears while slowing Chinese growth is hurting commodity exporters like Australia and Canada.”
Most countries now actively want a weak currency to make their exports more competitive. “China seems happy to let the renminbi drift lower, the Swiss are still running quantitative easing at full tilt and central bankers everywhere are actively talking down their currencies or offering only limited support," says Mr Mould.
This is a race to the bottom, and everybody wants to be a winner.
