Doctor Ahmed Najeeb, expert in cardiovascular diseases at Al Qassimi Hospital, stressed there are 5 to 6 people out of every 10 who come to the hospital for screenings that are diagnosed with blood pressure problems and only two of those diagnosed have previous knowledge of the problem.
According to Al Ittihad, The National's sister publication, Dr Najeeb said: "Half the number of people who suffer from blood pressure problems are unaware of it and suffer from increased health problems. They are susceptible to contracting other diseases such as cerebral haemorrhage and cardiac arrests and other diseases, which is why [high] blood pressure is called the 'silent killer'. It is important for people to undergo periodical screenings, particularly for men who are over 40 and women who are over 50."
He warned young people against taking bodybuilding pills that greatly contribute to the risk of narrowed arteries and hypertension, causing heart attacks.
