After receiving complaints from the public, the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority has looked into rumours of pork derivatives in McDonald’s products but found no cause for concern.
Based on foreign reports, a rumour claimed there was pork in the mayonnaise and other condiments that originated in the US.
Mohammed Jalal Al Rayssi, head of community services and communications at ADFCA, said border reports made no mention of any McDonald’s products from the US coming through Abu Dhabi ports and airports.
He also said that the Muslim Judicial Council and the International Society for Quranic Studies in the US are accredited to issue Halal food licences in the United Arab Emirates.
Mr Al Rayssi said inspectors contacted McDonald’s to ensure that the products marketed and sold in Abu Dhabi branches are safe and comply with the emirate’s requirements.
Mayonnaise and condiment samples used at McDonald’s were analysed in a lab, and results confirmed the samples were free from pork derivatives. Condiments used by Abu Dhabi McDonald’s restaurants are produced in Egypt.
The authority stressed that most food-related rumours circulating around social media and the internet are untrue, and residents should refrain from spreading incorrect information.
