DUBAI // As an entrepreneur with a blossoming communications company, Briton Sallie Bruce used maternity nurses to help juggle her life in Dubai as a new mother and businesswoman.
Her son Hugo is 18 months old and has been supported by a maternity nurse at home for more than a year.
“Without this, we would not exist as a business and I would not have been able to juggle the two,” she said.
“It is quite difficult, but the flexibility of having a nurse when I need her is a huge help.
“I looked at a permanent nanny but they need to know exact times and dates. Because of the nature of my job, I just can’t do that. Often, we have the same nurse each month, and if I’m running later with work, I can get the nurse to wait with my son until I’m home.
“Hugo loves the nanny almost as much as my husband and I.
“He has formed a close relationship, and we trust her. It gives us peace of mind that he is with a registered nurse so that if anything does happen, they are equipped to deal with it.”
Mrs Bruce is not concerned her son may find if difficult to adjust to life without the nurse.
“This part of an expat life,” she said. “Friends and relationships always move on. It would cost the same to send Hugo to nursery, but I know he is in safe hands if he is not well.
“Having someone who knows what is going on is important for us and the nurse is also very good at dealing with behavioural problems.”
