DUBAI // The next generation of doctors and nurses will hone their skills at a new multimillion-dirham medical centre.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Centre was officially opened on Monday by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
It is aiming to be the “academic arm of Dubai Healthcare City”, said Dr Amer Ahmad, the managing director of Dubai Healthcare City’s education division.The centre houses the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Centre, comprising an emergency department, two operating theatres, an intensive-care unit and a maternity room.
“This state-of-the-art centre is the first of its kind in the UAE for the training of healthcare professionals in a simulated environment with no risk to patients,” Dr Ahmad said.
“Even in sophisticated healthcare systems many patients are harmed, not as a result of illness but as a result of preventable human error.”
The centre also houses the Al Maktoum Medical Library – which has a collection of 1,500 electronic books, 1,500 journals and 13 databases of medical resources – and the Dubai School of Dental Medicine.
"Sheikh Mohammed's vision is to support world-class medical research centres in the UAE. Through the centre we can create a sustainable quality workforce, allowing those in the UAE to be best treated closer to home," Dr Ahmad said.
