The UAE is mass testing people for coronavirus to identify undiagnosed cases and those who do not show symptoms.
The extensive testing programmes aims to end the outbreak by tracing and isolating new cases and their contacts.
The lab in Masdar City, the first facility of its kind to operate on an extensive scale outside of China, has helped speed up the diagnosis of suspected cases, screening of their close contacts and other high-risk groups.
The country has also boosted testing capacity as thousands visit drive-through centres, with each capable of testing up to 500 or 600 people a day.
More than 32,000 tests were carried out on Tuesday alone.
With such extensive screening in place, who should be tested and how much does it cost?
The National explains.
Who should be screened for the disease?
According to health authorities, anyone who shows symptoms of the virus should be tested.
This includes fever, difficulty in breathing, coughing, headache and a sore throat.
“In addition to the symptoms, they check if you had a recent travel trip or had close contact with an infected person or anyone suspected of being infected,” said the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre.
Is testing free?
Yes, testing is free of cost for people with existing medical conditions, the elderly, pregnant women and those displaying symptoms of Covid-19.
Everyone else must pay a Dh370 fee through the Seha app.
Where can you go to get tested?
Those who wish to get tested can go to any of the 14 drive-through testing centres across the country.
In Abu Dhabi, there are testing centres in Ghayathi, Madinat Zayed, Al Wathba, Zayed Sports City, Al Bahia, and Al Hili and Asharej in Al Ain.
In Dubai, there are drive-through centres in Al Khawaneej, Port Rashid, Al Nasr Club, Dubai Festival City, Al Qusais, Silicon Oasis, Discovery Gardens, Al Warqa and International City.
There are also testing centres in each of the five other emirates.
How is the test performed?
At the drive-through centres, drivers place their Emirates ID cards into a registration machine as nurses take a nasal swab and a temperature reading.
Health departments in the city where the test is performed take care of the process by advising a period of isolation or stay in hospital.
Results are delivered via a text message within 48 hours.
If people test positive, what next?
If the patient is insured, “insurance companies will honour any claims received,” according to instructions issued to hospitals in the UAE.
Those who are uninsured, suspected or are confirmed cases will not foot medical bills at healthcare facilities, with the government bearing the cost.

Another way to earn air miles
In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability. Air Miles is linked up to HSBC credit cards and can also be earned through retail partners such as Spinneys, Sharaf DG and The Toy Store.
An Emirates Dubai-London round-trip ticket costs 180,000 miles on the Air Miles website. But customers earn these ‘miles’ at a much faster rate than airline miles. Adidas offers two air miles per Dh1 spent. Air Miles has partnerships with websites as well, so booking.com and agoda.com offer three miles per Dh1 spent.

Types of bank fraud
1) Phishing
Fraudsters send an unsolicited email that appears to be from a financial institution or online retailer. The hoax email requests that you provide sensitive information, often by clicking on to a link leading to a fake website.
2) Smishing
The SMS equivalent of phishing. Fraudsters falsify the telephone number through “text spoofing,” so that it appears to be a genuine text from the bank.
3) Vishing
The telephone equivalent of phishing and smishing. Fraudsters may pose as bank staff, police or government officials. They may persuade the consumer to transfer money or divulge personal information.
4) SIM swap
Fraudsters duplicate the SIM of your mobile number without your knowledge or authorisation, allowing them to conduct financial transactions with your bank.
5) Identity theft
Someone illegally obtains your confidential information, through various ways, such as theft of your wallet, bank and utility bill statements, computer intrusion and social networks.
6) Prize scams
Fraudsters claiming to be authorised representatives from well-known organisations (such as Etisalat, du, Dubai Shopping Festival, Expo2020, Lulu Hypermarket etc) contact victims to tell them they have won a cash prize and request them to share confidential banking details to transfer the prize money.

Know before you go
- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.
- If you’re driving, make sure your insurance covers Oman.
- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.
