ABU DHABI // An award recognising excellence in medicine will encourage high-quality performance in health care, officials announced yesterday.
The Health Authority-Abu Dhabi launched the Abu Dhabi Medical Distinction Awards to "stimulate health professionals to increase knowledge and to improve performance in health care", said Dr Jamal Al Kaabi, the director of customer care and corporate communications.
He said the award was also intended to promote Emiratisation.

Nominees are selected by their employer or organisation. Approximately 30 private and public facilities, including UAE University's faculty of medicine and the Red Crescent in Abu Dhabi, are eligible to nominate staff. Each institution may nominate up to eight candidates, and 50 per cent must be Emiratis.
Dr Mohammed Al Seiari, the director of health system compliance at Haad and general secretariat of the award, said this condition would encourage Emiratis to contribute effectively in Abu Dhabi's healthcare field.
"It is a way of advising institutions to look for locals who can be important partners in the future and publicise their distinctive work," he said. "This type of prize will increase awareness of local doctors in health care, increase their participation and show us the percentage of Emiratis excelling in the healthcare sector."
Of 17 committee members who would select winners, 90 per cent were Emirati, said Dr Al Kaabi. Two winners will be selected from each of eight categories, including surgical performance, clinical performance and research.
Nominations can only be made online at www.haad.ae/adma from July 17 to August 29. Winners will be chosen by the end of September.
