ABU DHABI // Hospitals in the emirate were awarded on Tuesday by the Health Authority Abu Dhabi for meeting waiting time targets.
The awards were handed out at the first awards ceremony for the Jawda healthcare quality initiative. Hospitals received awards in two main categories: Timeliness of Care and People’s Choice.
The Timeliness of Care Awards are based on an overall composite score calculated using waiting time performance data submitted to Haad last year, and covers all specialised and general hospitals in the emirate that have been fully operation for at least a year.
Dar Al Shifa Hospital and Emirates International Hospital won in the small-size hospitals category; Al Ahli Hospital Company in the medium-size hospitals category; and Madinat Zayed Hospital in the large-size hospitals category.
The People’s Choice Award is based on a patient experience survey commissioned by Haad. More than 40,000 patients – who received care across all public and private, specialised and general hospitals operating in Abu Dhabi last year – were interviewed.
Gulf Diagnostic Centre won in the small-size hospitals category, NMC Specialty Hospital Abu Dhabi in the medium-size hospitals category, and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in the large-size hospitals category.
Hospitals that fail to meet Jawda targets could face funding cuts, which would likely be applied directly to public hospitals, while private hospitals could have their grants reduced or payments from health insurers held.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
