Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE, has issued a decree appointing Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, former deputy prime minister, as his representative in the Western Region. Sheikh Khalifa acted in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi in making the appointment. Sheikh Hamdan is also chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority as well as being the incumbent chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi and chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Coordination Office. He had previously served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
Top officials and citizens at the Western Region (Gharbia) welcomed his appointment according to WAM, the state news agency.. Mohammed Azan Al Mazrouie, the director general of the Gharbia Development Council, said: "We welcome this move as Sheikh Hamdan is a unique personality and leader of first class. He inherited the wisdom, humanitarian spirit and skills of the ruler from his late father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. "The appointment of Sheikh Hamdan will give the region's development a big boost as many achievements are expected to be realised at his hand," he added. A veteran pilot by practice, Sheikh Hamdan is also an ardent lover of safaris, falconry and marine sports. He owns the Aryam Stables which have won several cups at international horse racing championships.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000

The Al Burda Festival is a celebration of Islamic art and culture, featuring talks, performances and exhibitions. Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, this one-day event opens with a session on the future of Islamic art. With this in mind, it is followed by a number of workshops and “masterclass” sessions in everything from calligraphy and typography to geometry and the origins of Islamic design. There will also be discussions on subjects including ‘Who is the Audience for Islamic Art?’ and ‘New Markets for Islamic Design.’ A live performance from Kuwaiti guitarist Yousif Yaseen should be one of the highlights of the day.

How do Sim card scams work?
Sim swap frauds are a form of identity theft.
They involve criminals conning mobile phone operators into issuing them with replacement Sim cards by claiming to be the victim, often pretending their phone has been lost or stolen in order to secure a new Sim.
They use the victim's personal details - obtained through criminal methods - to convince such companies of their identity.
The criminal can then access any online service that requires security codes to be sent to a user's mobile phone, such as banking services.
