DUBAI // Three armed robbers stole electric cables worth Dh160,000, a court heard yesterday.
The trio entered the Emirates Electric Engineering Company late at night on June 23 this year and assaulted two security guards, prosecutors told the Criminal Court.
“Two men came to me and asked about directions to a nearby building and suddenly as I looked back I saw a man holding a large metal bar who struck me on the head,” recalled one of the guards, S K, 24, from Nepal. “I lost consciousness and woke up an hour later to find myself tied up.”
His colleague was also tied up and blindfolded. The colleague, M T, said he was awake throughout the robbery and that each time he moved one of the robbers would assault him.
At the Criminal Court, A M, 32, denied charges of armed robbery, assault and issuing threats to kill. His compatriots M N, 33, and O K, 25, face similar charges but remain at large.
Prosecutors said that A M confessed during interrogations and said he carried out the robbery because he had been fired from the company.
The case was adjourned to October 27.

1970
October 26: Bahrain withdraws from a proposal to create a federation of nine with the seven Trucial States and Qatar.
December: Ahmed Al Suwaidi visits New York to discuss potential UN membership.
