The UAE's decision to grant citizenship to highly qualified and talented professionals will only build on the Emirates' success story, some of the country's business and medical leaders said.
Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, chairman and managing director of VPS Healthcare, described the move as "historic" and said it would attract "an influx of the world's brightest minds".
"This will pave the way in scripting another success story in the history of the country," Dr Vayalil said.
"The ease of doing business and the support of the leadership have helped many, like me, in realising their dreams.
"The decision has come at the right time. This is a great opportunity and honour for residents like us, and we are always thankful and indebted to the leadership of this great nation for allowing us to explore the potentials and opportunities here."
On Saturday, it was announced that residents would be able to obtain Emirati citizenship if they are nominated by government or royal court officials then approved by government.
They can retain their original nationalities, allowing them to become dual citizens, for the first time.
Dr Azad Moopen, chairman and managing director of Aster DM Healthcare, said it was heartwarming and exciting news for people who had worked in the country for decades.
"While it will help many people who have played a significant role in the development of the country, it will also help to attract new talents in various specialised fields to the country,” Dr Moopen said.
"This will further propel UAE to be one among the most progressive countries in the world."
Dr Santosh Kumar Sharma, medical director and consultant neurosurgeon at NMC Royal Hospital in Dubai Investment Park, said the decision valued the work of experienced doctors.
“Recognising their contribution and honouring citizenship is the ultimate reward for them,” Dr Sharma said.
Dr Vayalil and Dr Moopen received golden long-term residency visas announced in 2019, which sought to attract exceptional academicians, researchers, sports stars and the business leaders.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, UAE Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, announced the scheme in May 2019 to give foreign investors the opportunity to establish deeper roots in the country and allow the nation to benefit from their expertise.
