Creative minds from across the UAE came together this week to forge a new brand for the country.

Artists, authors, poets and calligraphers from each emirate gathered in Dubai as part of a competition to come up with a logo and slogan.

Each team comprised seven members – one from each of emirates – and had only one day to create a submission.

The competition was announced earlier this month by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

Here, The National takes a closer look at five of the 49 participants.

The winner of the competition will be announced in due course. Sulthan Khan

Tearful appearance

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.

She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.

A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.
