Six sports centres were fined in Dubai at the weekend for flouting Covid-19 safety rules.
The establishments were penalised for not following the guidelines on wearing face masks and practising social distancing.
Ten other places were issued with warnings and asked to stick to the guidelines.
Inspectors from Dubai Sports Council and Dubai Economy carried out the checks of several sports centres.
The authorities did not name the facilities that were fined but urged all sports clubs, academies and training centres in the emirate to follow the safety measures.
They said inspection visits by DSC and Dubai Economy teams will be intensified in the coming days to ensure full compliance with Covid-19 protocols.
All sports establishments were given a list of guidelines to follow when they reopened on May 28.
This is for the safety of staff and visitors, DSC said.
The centres are expected to maintain high levels of hygiene and disinfect equipment and premises regularly.
They should also ensure that a safe distance of two metres is kept between gym users and personal trainers.
Staff have also been instructed to wear masks, check the temperature of each visitor, provide sanitiser and display clear signage about the rules.
They must also update the records of their members, including their names, telephone numbers and visit dates, for use if contact tracing becomes necessary.
Authorities fined 22 other businesses on Saturday for breaching Covid-19 guidelines.
In its latest round of inspections, the Department of Economic Development warned two other entities to take the precautionary measures seriously, while 649 businesses were found to be complying with them.
Efforts are being stepped up across the country to clamp down on those who ignore the rules.
The department has called on the public “to co-operate and contribute to keeping the emirate’s economy moving forward in spite of the pandemic threat”.
“Stern action will be taken against any non-compliance found during the inspections or that may be reported by consumers and the public,” it said.

How much of your income do you need to save?
The more you save, the sooner you can retire. Tuan Phan, a board member of SimplyFI.com, says if you save just 5 per cent of your salary, you can expect to work for another 66 years before you are able to retire without too large a drop in income.
In other words, you will not save enough to retire comfortably. If you save 15 per cent, you can forward to another 43 working years. Up that to 40 per cent of your income, and your remaining working life drops to just 22 years. (see table)
Obviously, this is only a rough guide. How much you save will depend on variables, not least your salary and how much you already have in your pension pot. But it shows what you need to do to achieve financial independence.

You can donate to several registered charities through a “donation catalogue”. The use of the donation is quite specific, such as buying a fan for a poor family in Niger for Dh130.
The General Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowments
The site has an e-donation service accepting debit card, credit card or e-Dirham, an electronic payment tool developed by the Ministry of Finance and First Abu Dhabi Bank.
Al Noor Special Needs Centre

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
