ABU DHABI // Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Development and International Cooperation, has highlighted UAE aid efforts and called for stronger partnerships and responses to humanitarian crises.
Her comments came during a meeting on Monday with European Union ambassadors to the country, to discuss strengthening cooperation in development and crisis response.
Sheikha Lubna said nations needed to devise a common strategy and develop an agreed set of goals to face challenges currently facing the global community, reported Wam, the state news agency.
She also highlighted the UAE’s provision of Dh1.64 billion in humanitarian aid to Yemen for infrastructure development, including redevelopment of the airport and the port of Aden, electricity stations, 11 hospitals and medical centres, and 123 schools.
Further plans include the development of 154 schools and other projects for Yemenis.
In Syria, the UAE had provided Dh2.2bn by the end of last year, including work in the joint UAE-Jordan refugee camp and hospital.
Aid efforts have also included the provision of food, medicine, water, education facilities and shelter aid for Syrian refugees.
Sheikha Lubna also highlighted projects in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt and Somalia, and redevelopment in Gaza.
Patrizio Fondi, ambassador of the EU delegation to the UAE, said the meeting was an opportunity to learn details about UAE humanitarian aid.
The ambassadors of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and the UK attended.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
- An Egyptian Mummy mask dating from 700BC-30BC, is on offer for £11,807 ($15,275) online by a seller in Mexico
- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950

Uefa Nations League: How it Works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.
Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.
