FUJAIRAH // A Dh7 billion budget for infrastructure projects was approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid on a trip to the country’s east coast on Monday.
According to state news agency Wam, the projects include approvals for housing aid, the building of new residential complexes, roads, schools, health centres and government buildings.
The Vice President and Ruler of Dubai tweeted about his visit, saying he was there to “review the development projects of three ministries”.
He added in another tweet: “A Dh5 billion budget for housing projects for the upcoming five years, with 42,000 beneficiaries, and the approval on 12 residential complexes.
“The government will closely follow-up on all sectors and infrastructure is at the top of its agenda to provide decent living conditions for citizens,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
He also met five ministers, inspected projects and reviewed future plans. He then visited a school in Kalba, and a youth sports complex in Fujairah and ordered that a similar complex be built in Ras Al Khaimah.
“During the school visit, the minister of education had suggested to include programming in the curriculum and develop the students’ self-reading and self-learning skills,” he tweeted.
He also approved the extension of Emirates Road leading to the Ras Al Khaimah ring road and the Khatm Al Milaha road reaching Fujairah.
He made an inspection visit to Safad Dam in Fujairah and reviewed with the Minister of Climate Change and Environment a plan to manage the water sources of local farmers.
“We will continue to monitor all the sectors and the infrastructure and it will be on the top of our agenda, to ensure a decent life for residents,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.
Sheikh Mohammed also offered his condolences to the family of martyr Mohammed Rashid Ali Al Dhanhani, who died on Saturday when the military vehicle he was travelling in overturned in Yemen.

Du Plessis plans his retirement
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said on Friday the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in two years' time will be his last.
Du Plessis, 34, who has led his country in two World T20 campaigns, in 2014 and 2016, is keen to play a third but will then step aside.
"The T20 World Cup in 2020 is something I'm really looking forward to. I think right now that will probably be the last tournament for me," he said in Brisbane ahead of a one-off T20 against Australia on Saturday.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
