DUBAI // A new award has been launched aimed at recognising and honouring companies that use progressive labour standards.
The Taqdeer Award was announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai and chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.
A points-based system will be used to judge and assess labour welfare practices that meet global standards.
“The award programme reflects the importance Dubai places on ensuring progressive labour practices in line with global standards,” said Sheikh Hamdan.
“The new programme is consistent with the objectives of Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a city of happy, empowered people.”
The award is named after the Arabic word for ‘appreciation’ and will be used as a way of promoting better labour welfare in the emirate.
The first year it will be focused on the construction sector and award organisers are inviting companies to take part by submitting documentation that will be evaluated by a judging committee.
Applicants will then be given points from one to five based on their evaluation and the awards are open to Dubai-based construction companies that employ manual workers.
“The extensive evaluation framework of the award will encourage companies to aspire to high standards in their management of labour,” said Sheikh Hamdan.
“We are confident that the award will help set new benchmarks for good labour practices across sectors and throughout the region.”
The aim was to make Dubai one of best places in the world to live and work, he said.
Sheikh Hamdan also praised the continuing efforts of the UAE Ministry of Labour in their effirt to create a safe environment for labour workers and urged all eligible companies to take part.
“Our country continues to enhance its legal framework for protecting labour rights and enhancing their quality of life,” he said.
Future editions will include factories in free zones where over 500,000 workers are employed, he said.
The award is for construction companies in civil, electrical and mechanical work that have been operating for at least two years and have executed a minimum of two projects in the last two years.
In the first year, only companies involved in the construction of buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, plumbing installation and power generation plants are eligible for applying.

Skewed figures
In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

What is a robo-adviser?
Robo-advisers use an online sign-up process to gauge an investor’s risk tolerance by feeding information such as their age, income, saving goals and investment history into an algorithm, which then assigns them an investment portfolio, ranging from more conservative to higher risk ones.
These portfolios are made up of exchange traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to indices such as US and global equities, fixed-income products like bonds, though exposure to real estate, commodity ETFs or gold is also possible.
Investing in ETFs allows robo-advisers to offer fees far lower than traditional investments, such as actively managed mutual funds bought through a bank or broker. Investors can buy ETFs directly via a brokerage, but with robo-advisers they benefit from investment portfolios matched to their risk tolerance as well as being user friendly.
Many robo-advisers charge what are called wrap fees, meaning there are no additional fees such as subscription or withdrawal fees, success fees or fees for rebalancing.
