The UAE sent 49 tonnes of food aid to Mauritania on Monday.
Food parcels will be given to the needy during the holy month and those struggling because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The UAE constantly seeks to provide all possible humanitarian support and help brotherly Arab countries that require solidarity and co-operation to overcome the negative impact of the pandemic, particularly on women and children," said Hamad Ghanem Al Mehairi, UAE’s ambassador to Mauritania.
“Since the start of the pandemic, and as part of its efforts to support Mauritanian healthcare workers, the UAE sent three aid planes carrying 33.2 tonnes of medical supplies, containing 352,000 testing kits and 70 ventilators, benefiting 33,200 medical professionals."
To date, the UAE has provided more than 1,944 tonnes of medical aid to more than 135 countries, benefiting about 1.9 million medics as they work to curb the spread of Covid-19.
On April 11, the UAE launched the 100 Million Meals campaign to feed the needy in 30 countries during Ramadan.
It officially reached the target of raising Dh100 million ($27.2m) in only 10 days.
The total was reached thanks to the generosity of 185,000 donors, including individuals and companies, inside and outside the UAE.
Every Dh1 donated helps to provide one meal in countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.
Poor families, refugees, orphans and widows in Jordan, Egypt and Pakistan have already started receiving ingredients that will help them prepare meals throughout the holy month.
In collaboration with the UN’s World Food Programme, 20 per cent of all food parcels will be secured in refugee camps in Palestine, Jordan and Bangladesh.

Some of Darwish's last words

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
