Zakat money can be used to buy food parcels through the 100 Million Meals campaign, Dubai’s Grand Mufti said on Monday.
Dr Ahmed Al Haddad, Grand Mufti at the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai, issued a fatwa that allows people to feed the needy by donating money to the campaign.
The UAE has set out a plan to fund 100 million meals in 20 countries across the region in one of the biggest food drives of its kind.
The campaign is an expansion of 2020’s 10 Million Meals campaign, which helped feed people in the UAE who had lost jobs or suffered salary cuts during the pandemic.
It also helped to feed people who would normally break their fast at iftars that are free of charge at mosques and other public places, which were cancelled last year due to the pandemic.
In a broader regional drive this year, Sudan, Lebanon, Jordan, Pakistan, Angola, Uganda and Egypt are among the countries who will benefit.
A website set up for the campaign allows people to fund 10 meals with as little as Dh10 to Dh500 or more.
Dr Al Haddad said donors and philanthropists from both inside and outside the country could donate zakat money in cash and urged them to support the campaign.
“This initiative helps poor people around the world,” he said.
“We must support this campaign with whatever we can as it will feed hungry and poor people and meet their needs during Ramadan.”
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives will co-ordinate with the Food Banking Regional Network and the UN World Food Programme to reach the people who need food most this Ramadan.
UAE residents with Etisalat and Du numbers can donate through their phone providers.

Basquiat in Abu Dhabi
One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.
It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.
“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Hili 2: Unesco World Heritage site
The site is part of the Hili archaeological park in Al Ain. Excavations there have proved the existence of the earliest known agricultural communities in modern-day UAE. Some date to the Bronze Age but Hili 2 is an Iron Age site. The Iron Age witnessed the development of the falaj, a network of channels that funnelled water from natural springs in the area. Wells allowed settlements to be established, but falaj meant they could grow and thrive. Unesco, the UN's cultural body, awarded Al Ain's sites - including Hili 2 - world heritage status in 2011. Now the most recent dig at the site has revealed even more about the skilled people that lived and worked there.

Financial considerations before buying a property
