Plan to teach 2.5 million Dubai workers their rights and obligations

The pilot project involves 100,000 construction workers and will conclude at the end of the year. Phase two will start in 2017 and the training will become mandatory for all workers in Dubai in 2018.

DUBAI // A programme to train 2.5 million workers in Dubai laws and regulations is to be set up by the Permanent Committee for Migrant Workers.

Major General Obaid Mehayer Bin Suroor, Deputy Director - General of the General Directory for Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai, and president of the permanent committee, said the plan is to train people from different countries, introducing them to UAE laws and regulations and explaining to them their rights and obligations.

Maj Gen Bin Suroor said that the pilot project involves 100,000 construction workers and will conclude at the end of the year. Phase two will start in 2017 and the training will become mandatory for all workers in Dubai in 2018.

Maj Gen Bin Suroor added that authorities are working to ensure workers are happy and more aware of the regulations that affect them.

The proposed training material will offer an introduction to labour law in the UAE and labour contracts, will introduce workers to the culture and social behaviour of the country and will cover professional health and safety.

Booklets will be handed out to workers, to explain their rights and obligations, during field visits to labour accommodation.

Pharaoh's curse

British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

“The biggest mistake people make is they panic when they see a bee. They are small but smart creatures. If you move your hand quickly to hit the bees, this is an aggressive action and bees will defend themselves. They can sense the adrenalin in our body. But if we are calm, they are move away.”

November 30: Despite  a power sharing agreement, Tehran takes full control of Abu Musa. 

November 31: UK officials visit all six participating Emirates to formally end the Trucial States treaties

December 2: 11am, Dubai. New Supreme Council formally elects Sheikh Zayed as President. Treaty of Friendship signed with the UK. 11.30am. Flag raising ceremony at Union House and Al Manhal Palace in Abu Dhabi witnessed by Sheikh Khalifa, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

December 6: Arab League formally admits the UAE. The first British Ambassador presents his credentials to Sheikh Zayed.

December 9: UAE joins the United Nations.

Farage on Muslim Brotherhood

Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.
