ABU DHABI // A major exhibition is expected to feature more than 15,000 senior security, safety and emergency experts from the Middle East and Africa region in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
The sixth International Exhibition for Security and National Resilience (ISNR) will tackle crucial issues, including homeland security and national resilience, information security and critical infrastructure security.
Held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, the three-day exhibition will be preceded by the International Conference on Security Challenges on Monday at the Armed Forces Officers Club.
“It’s very important to have such conferences,” said Nauman Arshad, chief executive of Xellerix, a Dubai-based company that provides advanced electronic security systems.
"It should be a combination of the government and private industry to encourage growth and innovation in that market, especially in homeland security and cyber-attacks, which will continue to increase in the future. So we need to be a bit more on top of it."
He said civilian and military cyber-security operations were present in the UAE but still in “early stages.”
“It’s getting in place but I think the government has a proper focus in this area and it’s extremely important,” he said. “It’s something that the UAE continues to build and that is a very important area to continue strengthening.”
Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, was briefed on Sunday on the final preparations for the exhibition.
The presentation, given by Maj Gen Obaid Al Ketbi, chairman of the exhibition organising committee, included details of the preparations for the opening ceremony, which will include a live “edutainment” performance called The Aftershock. It is aimed at promoting the UAE’s approach in emergency response and public safety readiness during a major crisis.
He said Sheikh Saif’s visit motivated all the personnel to work harder and turn the event into a huge success.
Sheikh Saif said he had confidence in Emirati talent and hoped the exhibition would achieve its goals. In previous years, the conference helped serve as a platform for UAE companies to attract more Emiratis to join the homeland-security industry.
“ISNR will provide our attending communications technology and defence services companies an ideal platform to exhibit their advanced technologies and expertise to local and international industry leaders,” said Homaid Al Shemmari, chief executive of Aerospace and Engineering at Mubadala.
“The participating companies will present their latest products and solutions in military maintenance, repair and overhaul services, systems integration, information security, satellite operations and geo-spatial mapping, all of which are vital to the UAE’s security industry.”
In 2012, 150 exhibitors took part in the three-day event. Experts called the UAE one of the “fastest-growing homeland security markets in the world”.
Last month, an annual report by the US Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration reported the UAE would double its budget for homeland security to US$10 billion (Dh36.7bn) in the next decade.

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush
Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”
A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.
“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”
