ABU DHABI // Emiratis earning less than Dh20,000 a month should be granted up to Dh800,000 for housing, the Federal National Council will tell the Cabinet.
In review of recommendations concerning the Sheikh Zayed Housing Fund following a debate in January with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak, head of the fund, members have pushed for changes to help as many Emiratis as possible.
Currently, successful applicants are given a free plot of land and up to Dh750,000 to build a house.
The money comes in the form of either a loan or a grant for families earning less than Dh15,000 a month - which members want raised to Dh20,000. They also want the amount paid to be raised to Dh800,000.
But some members expressed concerned that raising the earnings floor would be counterproductive, with limited funds resulting in longer delays to payments.
"The minister said if it was raised by Dh1,000, fewer would benefit," said Dr Amal Al Qubaisi (Abu Dhabi).
To compensate for that, members also recommended an increase in the fund's overall budget.
The council therefore voted for any increase to be ring-fenced, so it could only be used for grants.

• Founded in 2014, Telr is a payment aggregator and gateway with an office in Silicon Oasis. It’s e-commerce entry plan costs Dh349 monthly (plus VAT). QR codes direct customers to an online payment page and merchants can generate payments through messaging apps.
• Business Bay’s Pallapay claims 40,000-plus active merchants who can invoice customers and receive payment by card. Fees range from 1.99 per cent plus Dh1 per transaction depending on payment method and location, such as online or via UAE mobile.
• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.

Weather warnings show that Storm Eunice is soon to make landfall. The videographer and I are scrambling to return to the other side of the Channel before it does. As we race to the port of Calais, I see miles of wire fencing topped with barbed wire all around it, a silent ‘Keep Out’ sign for those who, unlike us, aren’t lucky enough to have the right to move freely and safely across borders.
We set sail on a giant ferry whose length dwarfs the dinghies migrants use by nearly a 100 times. Despite the windy rain lashing at the portholes, we arrive safely in Dover; grateful but acutely aware of the miserable conditions the people we’ve left behind are in and of the privilege of choice.

- Mold is bad: the colour pink is a sign of mold. If yogurt turns pink as it ferments, you need to discard it and start again. For kraut, if you remove the top leaves and see any sign of mold, you should discard the batch.
